Other research activities (non funded)
  • Optical Tomographic Imaging (OTI): A pilot study prior to submitting a grant application. It attempts to validate OTI - a new imaging technique  devoid of radiation exposure for the patient –  against physical examination, musculoskeletal ultrasound, and disease activity measures for the evaluation of synovitis in Rheumatoid arthritis. This research is currently IRB appoved and enrolls patients at Columbia University.

In collaboration with Andreas Hielscher PhD Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering & Radiology at Columbia University, New York, NY

  • Chronic Obstrutive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in Rheumatoid Arthritis: A pilot study prior to submitting a grant application. It attempts to validate Computer Tomographic Densitometry – an imaging modality capable of quantifying pulmonary parenchyma involvement by COPD/ emphysema. Data already acquired are being verified and analyzed. Lung involvement (including COPD) is the second cause of mortality in patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis.

In collaboration with Graham Barr MD,  Professor of Medicine (pulmonology) at Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York, NY & in Collaboration with the radiology Department of the university of Iowa.

  • Development of a Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) Registry in the United States: Leveraging the expertise I acquired in developing an international registry ( CORRONA international – 5790 patients in Latin America, Asia and Europe) and a comparative effectiveness and safety study ( CORRONA CERTAIN – 2733 patients across the United States) I am designing an observational registry in SLE.

In collaboration with George Tsokos MD, Professor of Medicine (Rheumatology) at Harvard University, Beth Israel Hospital, Boston, MA
